Slow wireless connection

Hi All,

I recently purchased a Netgear WGR614v6 wireless router to connect my windows xp laptop wirelessly to my cable modem (Motorola SB5101). Though my router is placed very near to my laptop, I'm not get the full 54mbps connection between my wireless pc card (Viewsonic wireless pc card) and router. At times I do get the connection speed as 54mbps but then it drops down to as low as 1mbps sometimes. I have the following questions:

1. Why does the connection drop to such a low speed even the distance between my modem and laptop is just only in feet? (Note: I have no cordless phones or microwaves nearby.)

2. My internet connection (4Mbps cable) tends to be very slow when connected wirelessly even when the connection speed between my router and my laptop is 54mbps. But it's fast when my laptop is directly connected to my cable modem. Why is this so?

It would be great if someone helps me out asap on the above two queries.

You might be getting interference from someone else in your neighborhood running on the same channel . Try changing channels , the best ones to use are 1, 6, or 11 .
